Does your tinnitus affect your left ear or right ear or both?
Have there been any studies in this area?

It can affect one ear or both depending upon the cause.
Wax buildup in the outer ear, ruptured eardrum, congested Eustachian tubes, some infection, Ménière’s disease, Side effects of certain drugs like sedatives, antidepressants, pain killers etc., Damage caused due to overexposure to loud noise, Elevated cholesterol and triglycerides level, diabetes, head or neck injury etc. are some reasons why humans have tinnitus.
most of these will cause tinnitus in both the ears but some like a gun shot induced nerve damage could be found only in one ear

If its caused by noise exposure its likely to be worse in the ear exposed to the noise. Otherwise its usually both ears
