The ringing or background noise in my ear has been going on for weeks.
Think it was caused by an ear infection. The sound is not too loud as i can only hear it in quiet environment. It sounds like an empty tape recorder being played, would this be tinnitus. I haven’t been to the doctors yet but just wanna know if this is tinnitus or not? And if so, will it be able to go away?

It does sound like you have tinnitus. If you want to know how to deal with your Tinnitus, I would suggest that you go to your doctor and ask him for a referral to see an otolaryngologist (aka Ears Nose and Throat Specialist (or ENT)), obviously it would be best if the ENT specialized in tinnitus. ENT’s that don’t specialize in tinnitus can’t really help you (trust me I know). And you should see an audiologist to have a really good hearing test done. The information that the ENT and audiologist gives you will help you determine what is causing your tinnitus, and whether or not it is treatable.Tinnitus is not the actual problem, it is a symptom. If you want to treat the tinnitus, you have to treat the cause.
Also, doctors really don’t know why you hear the ringing sound. A new common theory is that it is all in your head. If you have dead hearing cells, your brain doesn’t know how to deal with the absence of the signal, so it creates it’s own sound. It is much like phantom limb syndrome, an amputee might feel pain from nerve endings that were on limbs that were amputated. Your brain doesn’t know what to do when it’s not receiving signals from nerve endings in the ear, and it assumes that there must be a sound, so it creates the sound.
In the mean time, you might want to try using white noise. I find that it is soothing and drowns out the ringing in my ears. If the ringing is stressing you out, white noise will help you ignore it. I have a bad case of tinnitus and I can hear it 24/7. My tinnitus was caused by noise induced hearing loss and there is no cure for it. I would highly urge everyone to visit my blog, http://mylifewithtinnitus.blogspot.com/ , it may help a few people.

yes, that sounds like tinnitus. I think i have it sometimes, it sounds like when you turn a TV on, but the volume is muted, you just hear the humming.
its also comparable to the sound a video game system (Super Nintendo especially) makes when you hit the reset button.
im not sure about how long it lasts, but i think it should become less frequent or you become used to it.
the serious level of tinnitus happens from prolonged exposure to loud noise, such as being in a marching band, working at a rifle range, etc.
